![]() I know schools use a lot Scholastic resources, and the company has a link to this lesson plan for Tikki Tikki Tembo (PDF). Some lessons were on websites that seemed reputable. I saw a lot of ideas for crafts and discussion. Before I settled on Tikki Tikki Tembo, I did a quick Google search for “Tikki Tikki Tembo lesson plan”. The illustrations struck me as outdated, but I know it is an old book. With Tikki Tikki Tembo, I remembered the incredibly long name and how fun that was to say. On the other hand, I had never read The Mitten so I was not sure at all what it would be like. But I had an uncomfortable memory of it too, thinking when I was older that it was not accurate and culturally insensitive. I remember loving Tikki Tikki Tembo as a kid. I found two books that seemed plausible: The Mitten and Tikki Tikki Tembo. I needed to find a book that was available both at the school and at the public library (so I could read it ahead of time). I started out this unit knowing that I would need to find a folktale and read it to the class, to promote reading that genre and to show how there was a lesson or moral in a folktale. Then I moved on to searching for fiction. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I started with how to find children’s picture books. In this lesson, I’m continuing to teach Grade 2 students how to use the school catalog Destiny.
